How the tests work, and what actually helps

Plain-English explanations of the tools on this site and honest comparisons of the services that reduce your exposure. Comparison guides are written from real test results, with a clear disclosure whenever a link is a paid one.

Methodology

How our leak tests work
The IP, DNS and WebRTC tests each measure a different layer of what your network reveals. The IP lookup reads the address every site already sees. The DNS test uses our own name server to reveal which resolver handles your lookups. The WebRTC test checks whether your browser hands out addresses that see around a VPN, using only our own STUN server so nothing goes to a third party. Full method and sources are on the about page.

Comparisons

VPNs that pass the leak tests soon
Which VPNs actually hold up on the DNS and WebRTC tests, not just marketing claims.
Data-broker removal services compared soon
What the paid "delete me from data brokers" services really do, and whether they are worth it.

Free versus paid, and what actually matters when you pick one.

When a comparison links to a product through a paid affiliate program, it will say so plainly, next to the link. Recommendations are based on test results, not payment.
